A Treadmill’s primary function is to move the belt at a constant speed or variable speeds as desired by the user. Since there is a constant motion, friction is inevitable and so is wear and tear. This is the prime reason why either the belt or the deck breaks after extensive use of the machine. Although it is highly unlikely that in due course of time, either of the components may not break, but it is possible to delay the same with the use of a treadmill lubrication.
Lubricating one’s treadmill is a careful job, and it is essential that you read through your user’s manual to find out if your treadmill requires lubrication in the first place or not. This is not surprising as these days, many companies provide decks which have been lubricated previously or do not require any form of lubrication at all. Lubricating such machineries will cause more damage to the belt and the deck by increasing the forces of friction between them. But don’t be biased about a company just because one of its model doesn’t require lubrication. Play safe and always read the manual provided with your treadmill.
Once you’ve figured that you can lubricate your treadmill, you have a choice between two basic types – wax or silicone. While the silicone is in the form of liquid and as sprays, wax can be applied as powder, granules or solidified form. Your manual will mostly inform about the recommended type of lubricant as well.
While lubricating, ensure that you have disconnected your treadmill and only attempt to lubricate it once you are aware of the procedure completely or under the guidance of an authorized service personnel. Read your manual for knowing how frequent the lubrication should be. The time period varies but on an average, it is about 6 months for professional trainers while a year gap is sufficient for those who walk or jog on it.
Maintaining your treadmill by lubricating it periodically will surely enhance the life of your belt and deck thereby saving you the inconvenience of getting it replaced as well as avoiding a huge maintenance bill.
